"When your profession becomes your passion, your work becomes more than a career, it becomes a way of creating meaning and impact."
That's the thread running through Udaya's two-decade journey in social development.
South Indian by origin but a true Ranchi girl at heart, Udaya Agarwal was born and raised in the small, beautiful capital city of Jharkhand. Growing up there shaped values she still carries today including simplicity, discipline, hard work, and staying connected to people.
She studied in a convent school run by missionaries, an environment that taught her to value time, responsibility, and commitment. Life at home was equally simple, with a South Indian family's uncomplicated routines and an unwavering focus on education.
From a young age, she wanted to work, build her own identity, and be financially independent. Watching her homemaker mother manage a single-income household, Udaya saw that financial independence meant not just security, but confidence and choice. Her parents ensured she and her two brothers had every opportunity to study and dream beyond traditional expectations.
Her journey took a defining turn when she cleared the Management Aptitude Test on her first attempt and joined the Postgraduate Programme in Rural Management at XISS, Ranchi. What began as an academic choice soon became a deeper purpose of understanding people’s realities, working with communities, solving problems, and bringing stakeholders together. Social development became not just a career, but her passion.
From development programmes to working with UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), government departments, and the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Udaya built experience across health, education, rural and youth development.
Her journey later expanded into programme management, CSR, fundraising, grants, and strategic partnerships. At CAF India, she worked with corporates, PSUs, and philanthropic organisations, learning how partnerships and resources can create meaningful social impact.
Looking back after more than 20 years in the sector, Udaya sees her journey as a series of simple choices, her parents' emphasis on education, the discipline she learned at school, her desire for independence, and her decision to study Rural Management, that quietly built into a lifelong calling.
Today, as Head of Programmes and Strategic Partnerships at United Way of Delhi, she continues that work, building sustainable, measurable impact alongside corporates, government institutions, donors, NGOs, and communities.
Her message, earned over two decades: when your work aligns with your values, it stops feeling like a job and starts feeling like meaning.
